Understanding protection
Start with what film does—and what to expect from it.
What is paint protection film?
Paint protection film, or PPF, is a protective layer applied over a compatible painted surface. It helps reduce damage from everyday abrasion, light scratches and road debris while preserving or changing the finish. FSE offers clear, satin, matte and colour options, with different products for different surfaces and applications.
How does PPF differ from vinyl wrap and ceramic coating?
PPF adds a physical protective film over the surface. Vinyl wrap is primarily used to change colour or graphics, while a ceramic coating is a thin surface treatment used for properties such as water repellency and easier cleaning. They serve different purposes: a coating does not provide the same physical barrier as PPF. SHHIFT combines a colour change with paint protection film.
What can protection film help prevent—and what can still damage it?
Protection film helps reduce everyday surface wear, minor scratches and damage from small debris. Results depend on the film, coverage and severity of the impact. Heavy impacts, sharp objects, deep cuts and prolonged contamination can still damage the film or underlying surface. Choose coverage around how you use your vehicle or space, then maintain it as recommended.
What does “self-healing” actually mean?
Self-healing refers to the film’s surface layer helping minor marks and fine scratches become less visible. Many FSE PPF products use heat-assisted self-healing; check the instructions for your specific film. It does not repair deep cuts, missing material, dents or damage in the paint underneath. Ask your installer before applying heat yourself.
Choosing your film
Find the finish and coverage that fit your project.
Which FSE series is right for my project?
Start with the surface and the result you want. MASTER covers clear and specialty automotive protection, while SHHIFT adds colour and protection together. Window films address sunlight, glare and privacy; CLEARVIEW is for windshield protection and VAPORTINT is for light styling and protection. MARINE, AERO and architectural ranges address specialist applications. Your installer can help confirm the right product.
Explore automotive products ↗What’s the difference between gloss, satin and matte?
Gloss gives a reflective, polished appearance. Satin softens reflections for a lower-sheen look, while matte produces a flatter finish. Clear films let the original paint colour show through; coloured films change it. The same finish can look different across body shapes and lighting conditions, so viewing an installed example or sample is helpful.
Does SHHIFT change the colour and protect the paint?
Yes. SHHIFT is colour paint protection film, combining a new appearance with a protective TPU layer over compatible paint. It offers gloss, satin and metallic colour choices, depending on the shade. It is designed for professional installation, with care requirements and warranty terms specific to the product and region.
Should I choose full coverage or protect high-impact areas?
Targeted coverage focuses your budget on the areas most exposed to wear, such as a vehicle’s front end. Full coverage extends protection across more painted panels and can provide a consistent finish throughout. Consider your driving conditions, parking, ownership plans and budget. A complete colour transformation generally calls for coverage of the visible exterior panels.
Can I see a physical colour sample?
Ask your installer or regional FSE distributor about SHHIFT swatches and sample availability. Screens and photographs can make colours appear different, especially metallic and colour-shifting finishes. View the sample in daylight and shade, and from several angles, before making your final selection.
Find your distributor ↗Installation & ownership
Plan the installation around your surface, budget and expectations.
How much does installation cost?
Your installer will quote for your specific project. Pricing depends on coverage, film choice, vehicle or surface complexity, preparation, finish details and local labour. For a useful comparison, ask what each quote includes: preparation, covered panels, edge treatment, aftercare and any installation warranty. Contact us if you need help finding an installer.
Get installer assistance ↗How long does installation take?
Timing depends on the size and complexity of the job, the surface condition and the preparation required. A small area of protection takes less time than a complete colour transformation or specialist project. Your installer should confirm the schedule, any curing or inspection period, and when the vehicle or surface can return to normal use.
Can film be applied to a used or repainted vehicle?
Often, but the condition of the paint matters. Film does not repair stone chips, peeling clear coat or poor paint adhesion. A professional should inspect the surface and determine whether correction or repair is needed first. For repainted panels, confirm curing requirements with the paint provider and discuss the additional risks associated with installation and future removal.
Can it be removed later?
Protection film can be professionally removed, but the outcome depends on paint condition, previous repairs, film age, exposure and removal technique. Sound original paint and weakened or repainted surfaces can behave differently. Have the surface assessed before installation and arrange professional removal when the film needs replacement or you want to change the finish.
Can one damaged panel be replaced?
In many cases, an installer can replace the film on the affected panel without replacing the entire installation. They will first check whether the damage is limited to the film. With coloured or aged film, colour availability, production batches and weathering may affect the match, so discuss the expected result before replacement.
Is protection worthwhile if I lease or change vehicles regularly?
Protection can be useful during a shorter ownership period because wear starts from the first drive. The decision depends on how you use the vehicle, which areas are exposed and the cost of the installation. For a lease, check return requirements before changing the colour. Film does not guarantee a higher resale price or eliminate lease-end charges.
Care & maintenance
A little routine care helps keep the finish looking its best.
When can I wash my vehicle after installation?
Follow the waiting period provided by your installer for the specific film and installation conditions. Adhesive settling and moisture evaporation can vary with temperature, humidity and the application. At handover, ask for written care instructions and confirmation of when to wash, use the vehicle normally and return for any follow-up inspection.
Can I use a pressure washer or automatic car wash?
Gentle hand washing is the preferred starting point for caring for a film-covered surface. Avoid abrasive brushes and directing high-pressure water at film edges or seams. Pressure, nozzle distance and chemical restrictions should follow your product’s care instructions. Ask your installer before using an automatic wash, especially with satin, matte or recently installed film.
How should I remove insects, bird droppings and other contamination?
Remove contamination promptly using a film-compatible cleaner and a soft, clean cloth or wash mitt. Soften deposits rather than scraping or aggressively rubbing them. Avoid experimenting with solvents, abrasives or strong chemicals. If a mark remains after gentle cleaning, ask your installer for a suitable treatment before trying a stronger product.
Can I apply a ceramic coating over the film?
A coating may be suitable if it is approved for the specific film and finish. Compatibility matters: some products can change the appearance of satin or matte film or affect its surface behaviour. Confirm the coating, application method and any warranty implications with your installer or FSE distributor before proceeding.
Do satin and matte films need different care?
Yes. Use care products intended for the film and its low-sheen finish. Polishing, abrasive compounds and gloss-enhancing products can create uneven shine or change the appearance. Clean gently and consistently, and ask your installer which cleaners and protective treatments are appropriate. Check a product’s compatibility before applying it across a visible panel.
Warranty & support
Know the terms for your product, application and region.
What warranty applies to my product?
Warranty periods differ across the FSE range. Use the Warranty Info link on the relevant product page, then confirm the applicable terms with your installer or regional distributor. Product, application, climate zone and eligibility conditions can affect coverage. Keep your invoice and product details so the installation can be identified if you need support.
Visit the Knowledge Center ↗What does the warranty cover and exclude?
The written warranty defines the covered defects, exclusions and available remedy for your specific film. Do not assume that a material warranty covers impact damage, normal wear, improper care or installation workmanship. Ask your installer to explain both the product warranty and any separate workmanship coverage before the installation.
Does coverage vary by country or climate zone?
It can. Some FSE products list different terms by climate zone, and regional warranty arrangements may also differ. The warranty shown for one product or market should not be assumed to apply everywhere. Your regional distributor can confirm the terms for the installation location and intended application.
Find your regional distributor ↗Is the warranty transferable?
Transferability depends on the written terms for your product. Some coverage is limited to the original owner and is not transferable. Check the applicable warranty before selling a vehicle or property, and do not assume that the remaining term automatically passes to a new owner.
How do I register my installation or request warranty support?
Ask your installer whether registration is required and which process applies in your region. Retain the invoice, installation date, product name and any registration confirmation. If a concern develops, contact the installing shop first with photographs and a description. Your regional distributor can help identify the next step if the installer is unavailable.
Contact FSE ↗Window & specialty films
Understand the differences before choosing a glass or lighting solution.
What’s the difference between window tint and windshield protection film?
Window tint is selected for benefits such as solar control, glare reduction, privacy and appearance. Windshield protection film is a different product intended to add an external protective layer to suitable windshield glass. Choose a film designed for the exact application; one should not be substituted for the other. Confirm visibility and local requirements with your installer.
What do VLT, IRR and TSER mean?
VLT is visible light transmission: a higher percentage lets more visible light pass through. IRR is infrared rejection, measured over a stated wavelength range. TSER is total solar energy rejected and describes broader solar performance. Compare figures using the same test conditions and glass specification; a single headline number does not describe every aspect of a film.
Does reflective window film provide privacy at night?
Reflective privacy depends on the balance of light on either side of the glass. When the room is brighter than outdoors, the daytime privacy effect can diminish or reverse. If privacy after dark matters, discuss frosted or opaque film where suitable, or combine solar-control film with blinds or curtains.
How do I confirm film compatibility with my building’s glass?
Have a qualified installer identify the glazing before choosing a film. Glass type, coatings, insulated units, existing damage and shading conditions can affect suitability. Provide any glazing specifications or manufacturer information available. The installer or distributor should confirm the film-to-glass recommendation and relevant warranty terms for the proposed application.
What does security film do?
Security film is designed to help hold broken glass together. Its performance depends on the film, glazing, frame and any specified attachment system. It does not make glass unbreakable or automatically make a window resistant to every threat. Discuss the project’s requirements with a qualified specialist and request evidence for the complete proposed system.
Marine, architectural & aerospace
The right film starts with the right application.
Can automotive film be used on other surfaces?
Do not assume that a film suitable for automotive paint is suitable for every surface. Substrate, coatings, exposure, cleaning methods and operating conditions all matter. FSE has dedicated marine, architectural and aerospace offerings. Ask for a product recommendation and compatibility assessment for the exact surface and use.
Discuss your project ↗Which marine applications are above the waterline?
FSE MARINE Hull Protection is described for suitable hull surfaces above the waterline. MARINE Lifestyle products address compatible interior and topside hard surfaces. These descriptions should not be treated as approval for continuous immersion or as an antifouling claim. Confirm the product, location and exposure with FSE before specifying the film.
Explore marine protection ↗What surfaces can architectural protection film cover?
Potential applications include compatible finished walls, doors, counters, cabinetry and other high-contact hard surfaces. Suitability depends on the material, surface texture, coating, use and cleaning routine. An installer should assess adhesion and appearance before application. For projects with specific fire-performance requirements, request the documentation for the proposed product and assembly.
Explore architectural protection ↗How is suitability assessed for an aircraft application?
Start with the aircraft, proposed location, substrate and operating conditions. FSE and the responsible aircraft maintenance or engineering team should review compatibility, installation requirements and any approvals needed for that use. A general product description is not aircraft-specific approval. Request the appropriate technical information and aerospace warranty terms before installation.
